Life on the edge: North Korean defectors in China

The situation facing North Korean defectors in China is both dire and urgent. Predominantly women, these defectors risk everything to escape North Korea’s oppressive regime or to find a better life. Many end up in China, where they face significant dangers. While some hope to move on to third countries, many become trapped in China and suffer severe human rights violations. Women are particularly vulnerable. Many fall victim to human trafficking, are forced into marriages, and endure horrific abuse, including sexual violence, forced labor, and constant fear of deportation.

In China, North Korean defectors lack legal protection and live under the constant threat of discovery and repatriation. The government in Beijing classifies them as illegal economic migrants and forcibly repatriates them to North Korea, where these individuals face harsh punishments, including torture, imprisonment, and even execution. The Chinese government’s refusal to recognize them as refugees and its active role in returning defectors only worsen their suffering. International human rights organizations have repeatedly called for global pressure on China to stop these repatriations and provide safe passage for defectors.

Vision North collaborates with field partners to rescue these at-risk individuals and guide them to safety.
